Why do stars twinkle?

Stars twinkle because of atmospheric refraction. When light from a star travels through Earth's atmosphere, it passes through layers of air with different temperatures and densities. This causes the light to bend multiple times, making the star appear to change brightness and position slightly, giving the effect of twinkling.
